The Money Song – Stand Up & Be Recognised! (Pt. 2) – Out NOW! – FREE DOWNLOAD!

Today is apparently the last day that music in the UK will be released on a Monday. Additionally, the people of Greece voted yesterday against further IMF imposed austerity by a margin of 61% against.

To mark both these occasions – though obviously Greece is a much more pertinent event – I’m announcing the release of a fresh jam – part 2 of the Stand Up & Be Recognised! EP, here’s “The Money Song”!

Written after the banks broke in 2008, it’s an issue I feel strongly about and an attitude that angers me even more in today’s political climate.

You can grab a FREE COPY from Bandcamp – either as Pt. 2 on its own, or as a bonus track if you buy Pts. 1 & 2.

Share if you dig it! It’s a #SocialistParty, y’all!

Prince – Baltimore (feat. Eryn Allen Kane) | New song for the Riots Benefit

Yesterday, I posted about the benefit His Royal Badness was hosting in Baltimore in tribute of the injustice suffered by the community over there, an mentioned the impending release of a new tune to mark the occasion. Here’s the song.

I have to say, even this is Prince on auto-pilot as he does these days (apparently, the track was written, performed and recorded in a burst of inspiration when he was alone in Paisley Park’s Studio A, and everything was transferred to Studio B the next day and mixed down), this track is pretty special. He manages to capture the weight of the situation whilst still keeping it nice and breezy. Really nice, uplifting track.

Of course, my heart goes out to the losses people have suffered. The Struggle Continues.

Prince To Release New Song “Baltimore” Via Tidal, Teams With Live Nation For “Rally 4 Peace” Concert – hypebot

There is a long and mixed history of musicians taking stands, writing songs and doing concerts to support causes. But it really is news when the usually reclusive and apolitical Prince pens a new tune and schedules a benefit concert in reaction to the recent unrest in Baltimore.

While we’ve been foaming at the mouth in the UK over the General Election hype, a much darker story has been unfolding across the pond. I can’t believe the blatant corruption and seemingly institutional racism at work in the 21st Century.

I haven’t heard the song yet, but even though it’s not the first time His Royal Badness has done benefit concerts, this is surely a most deserving and righteous cause to rally towards.

What’s good, people? Wilsoni Tha’ Funk Masta here, bringing an injection for the Funk Junkies:

So on Wednesday, I got a little note from Prince…

Not personal, obviously. Rather curiously, P seems to have done a little backroom deal with LiveNation – as I got an e-mail through my inbox to this effect:

A Note From Prince

Sorry 2 bother U.

Just wanted 2 send U this baby picture of Judith Hill with Her 1st piano.

Loox like her parents, who r also musicians- had a plan.
Well, that plan succeeded.

This is Judith Hill’s debut album  BACK IN TIME.

Please spend some time with this music and then share it with someone U love.

The story goes, despite being featured on the US version of The Voice, it was an interview on a European TV show that drove Prince to track Judith down and offer up his skills in production, songwriting and general spotlight-shining.

Whilst an accomplished artist in her own right – providing BVs for the likes of MJ, Stevie and Elton John (featuring on the recent documentary 20 Feet from Stardom), this record will certainly help in giving Judith the exposure she deserves.

I’m pimping the lead track “As Trains Go By” mainly for that rude synth bass, but I recommend “Wild Tonight” and “My People” for ridiculous NPG grooving, or “Cry, Cry, Cry” if you’re on a more old-skool R&B ballad tip.

It’s certainly put a smile on my face!

Hunting 4 Prince’s Vault

Hunting for Prince’s Vault (BBC Documentary by Mobeen Azhar March 2015) by The Gray Area Show on Mixcloud

Over the past week I’ve had a few people asking me “does Prince really have a vault full of unreleased music in his house?”. And I’ve been like “Yeah! I thought everyone knows that?”. Apparently not.

It’s old news amongst the Purple Army that His Royal Badness’ prolific nature has yielded a lifetime of as-yet unheard music (a large chunk of which circulates amongst bootleggers and fans, some in my collection!), but it seems like new news at the moment in the music press due to the arrival of a short film on the iPlayer and an hour-long documentary on the BBC World Service – which was uploaded to Mixcloud and is available here for your listening pleasure.

Educate yourself! Interviews include old band members such as Eric Leeds (my joint fav Sax player with Maceo) and his tour manager brother Alan, who has worked with James Brown and D’Angelo amongst others.
