Wilsoni’s BBC Playlister Playlist – 30/07/2015

A couple of really great picks from the radio in July – despite the iPlayer Radio app removing the alarm function! Really screwed with my sleeping habits!
I terms of new stuff, Tame Impala obviously with some nice grooves, the new Beck track is catchy with a Fatback (though maybe lyrically a bit shallow in the chorus, eh?), a bit of Joni from my favourite album of hers, old acquaintance Chad Jackson’s No.1 blast from the past, and some delicious Rare Groove from Gilles’ show last Saturday.

Top pick of the month, though: Thundercat‘s new jam “Them Changes”. I LOVE this. Always keen to hear what Thundercat and FlyLo have got in store for us – the man’s virtuoso liquid vibes!

Radio picks for another month. Not as many new tunes for June (that I picked up, anyway), but a few treats, including the Alabama Shakes single that I can’t quite decide what it is, but it’s definitely Funky.

Also, a track that I playlisted but couldn’t find on YouTube is “Pinch of the Death Nerve” by Leeds-based jazz-type outfit The Sorcerers. It’s great, got some nice Farfisa/Vox organ and dirty breaks. You can pre-order their album from Bandcamp – click here.

New Music: Wilsoni Tha’ Funk Masta | SupaJam / News

In 2010, after the results of the general election which bought a coalition government to Britain, Wilsoni Tha’ Funk Masta wrote a song called ‘Stand Up and Be Recognised’. Well, it’s five years later and Britain faces another coalition, and millions of people don’t know who to vote for because every single party causes doubt.

It was tight, but they managed to squeeze it in for the election. It’s quite a heartfelt piece too.

Check it out!

I’m a big radio fan, and my life soundtrack is pretty evenly split between my mp3s on shuffle and BBC 6 Music.

The Playlister is a great invention! In my formative years, my bedroom coated in a thick layer of post-it-notes and scribblings – an attempt to chronicle ear-grabbing audio. It’s a bit less tangible (which makes me a little sad), but a lot more convenient.

Here’s what piqued my interest throughout my radio bingeing sessions – and hopefully what will become a monthly feature.

Strange People played on The Tom Robinson Show!

After being played on The BBC Introducing Mixtape on the 6th April, Tom picked the track to feature on his regular BBC 6 Music show last Saturday!  Here’s the link – the song gets played around 1hr 3mins in:

Mr. Robinson had some kind words, too!

“…an immaculate, beautiful, grooving track that we really ought to pass on to Craig Charles…”

Fingers crossed!

Don’t forget that the Strange People EP is available now from all good digital distributors. Click through to the ‘Music’ section, or click here to support direct and grab a copy from Bandcamp.
