Wilsoni’s BBC Playlister Playlist – December 2015

And that’s it for 2015 folks! Was it good for you? Hope you’re not still fighting the baulk.

Surprisingly, December’s picks are almost decidedly un-festive, so I’ve stuck my own contribution into the mix – but if the Phil Spector Christmas album just isn’t cutting it this year, head over here for my own style of Funky Christmas Mix.

What have we got this month, then? Well, classics (of course) from the likes of P-Funk, Jimi and Bill Withers, some upstanding and outstanding new grooves from Kendrick, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and some more brand new Bowie from the new album (!!). We’ve also got the boom-bap covered with DJ Shadow, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, J5 and some stuff I’d never heard (thanks Huey!) from Japanese producer Matatabi (real Dilla-esque) and Mecca:83. Even got some 2-Tone, Boogie/ Space-Disco…

Give it a spin. And feel free to comment if you’re digging the mixes!

Happy 2016 People! Hope it’s a good one.

Wilsoni’s BBC Playlister Playlist – November 2015

Another month, another playlist for your listening pleasure.

I’m sure I always say this, but this one’s particularly groovy!

Looks to be mostly classic cuts this month, but particular highlights include pre-sampling hypocritical genius from James Brown, sampling David Bowie’s Fame in his track Hot (I Need To Be Loved Loved Loved), oft-sampled gems from the likes of Pointer Sisters, The Delfonics and Lee Dorsey, Bowie himself in the form of floor-filler Fashion and some new (!) music from upcoming album Blackstar (Is it about Kendrick?). There’s post-punk electronic tangents from Curis & Cosey, Porsche Majeure and Sleaford Mods, not one but TWO face-pullers from The Isley Brothers and even some real tasty UK Hip-Hop from Loyle Carner (and the Barry White sample from Roots’ new cut). Just to name a few!

I’m really excited about the MED/BLU/MADLIB collab. feat. MF DOOM, called Knock Knock from the fresh album BAD NEIGHBORS. Such a groove! Proof that Tha’ Beat Konductor can still pick ’em.

Enjoy.

So, it looks like all I did in October was listen to the radio – here’s 95 (!) selections from this month’s programming.

As such, there’s a pretty eclectic mix here – some Afrobeat from Rim Kwaku Obeng, Elecronica grooves from the likes of Nao and new Aphex Twin, downtempo grooves from folks like Warmth and Morcheeba, a fantastic return from Roots Manuva (and Guy Garvey’s new track really gets down and dirty!), Jazz Music (Kamasi Washington Jr. ftw),  Roots Reggae, Hip-Hop, old favs… it’s all over the place, so feel free to stick it on in the background and let it wash over you.

I swear, I’m tagging so many tracks from 6 Music that I can’t keep track of potential doubles in these playlists? But it’s cool – it’s all good listening!

Some Really Heavy Grooves this month, too many to mention – T.S.S. Groove, Gary Clarke, Jr., Tuxedo, Kate Tempest, The Souljazz Orchestra… Plus some heritage tips from the likes of Shuggie, Sly, Liquid Liquid and Jimi, and the Theme from The Warriors to celebrate the gang coming out to play in Coney for one last time earlier in the month Even some reggae thrown in for good measure 😀

Enjoy. Stick it on in the background, and try to stop your toe tappin’.

Wilsoni’s BBC Playlister Playlist – 28/08/2015

Here’s your lot from August. Bit of 1st World Problem this month as the BBC updated the iPlayer Radio app and removed the alarm function (click that link and read the comments, if you’re interested – I’m not the only person who was a bit miffed about it), so I’d been having a hard time listening during the week ’till they brought it back. Good thing it’s all about Funky Saturday – Huey, Gilles, and Craig Charles.

Anyway, a lot of classics in this month’s playlist – Rick James, AWB, Esther Williams… a few I got hipped to from playing GTA in Uni from the likes of The Pointer Sisters, Galaxy… Some selections from the week David Lynch was on promoting his curation of the Meltdown Festival on the Southbank… And one of my all-time favs in the form of “Skin Tight” by the Ohio Players.

Pick of the month – it’s gotta be “We Continue” by Dam-Funk. The album’s due to drop on September 4th.

Wilsoni’s BBC Playlister Playlist – 30/07/2015

A couple of really great picks from the radio in July – despite the iPlayer Radio app removing the alarm function! Really screwed with my sleeping habits!
I terms of new stuff, Tame Impala obviously with some nice grooves, the new Beck track is catchy with a Fatback (though maybe lyrically a bit shallow in the chorus, eh?), a bit of Joni from my favourite album of hers, old acquaintance Chad Jackson’s No.1 blast from the past, and some delicious Rare Groove from Gilles’ show last Saturday.

Top pick of the month, though: Thundercat‘s new jam “Them Changes”. I LOVE this. Always keen to hear what Thundercat and FlyLo have got in store for us – the man’s virtuoso liquid vibes!

Radio picks for another month. Not as many new tunes for June (that I picked up, anyway), but a few treats, including the Alabama Shakes single that I can’t quite decide what it is, but it’s definitely Funky.

Also, a track that I playlisted but couldn’t find on YouTube is “Pinch of the Death Nerve” by Leeds-based jazz-type outfit The Sorcerers. It’s great, got some nice Farfisa/Vox organ and dirty breaks. You can pre-order their album from Bandcamp – click here.
